Ghosts of Amistad: In the Footsteps of the Rebels is a documentary by Tony Buba that is based on Marcus Rediker’s book, The Amistad Rebellion: An Atlantic Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom. It chronicles a 2013 trip to Sierra Leone to visit the home villages of the people who seized the ship (Amistad) on which they were enslaved in 1839.
The film includes interviews with elders, a search for the long-lost ruins of the slave trading factory, Lomboko, and the knowledge of local villagers to recover the lost history of this important event in the fight against slavery.
